How Home Healthcare Benefits Seniors and Recovering Patients – and Saves Costs

Before the advent of the modern healthcare, caring for someone medically at home was quite common.  While the caregivers in the past were generally the family or friends, it is not very common anymore.

Since parents have to earn they cannot be at home all the time to take care of the kids. Similarly when the kids grow up, they move out of home in search of jobs, or other obligation and the old parents are on their own.

So the home health care usually consists of a professional health care team who take care of the ill and elderly. There are several factors why home healthcare is better than the nursing home or the hospital care.

Some of these factors are:

  • Home care promotes healing. There is enough evidence that patients heal more quickly at home.
  • It helps to keep the elderly independent.
  • It is delivered on a one-to-one basis hence is more personalized and generates a positive feeling that all of us associate with being at home.
  • Home care allows a maximum amount of freedom and we don’t have the regimented, regulated environments as we have in the hospitals.
  • Home care involves the individual in the care that is delivered. The patient and his family are taught to participate in their health care.
  • While at home patients are able to make personal choices regarding their meals, schedules and other activities of daily living.
  • Research shows that home health care services can improve client’s ability to walk or move around and do other routine tasks on a daily basis independently.
  • Home care reduces stress unlike any other form of health care, which can increase anxiety and stress.
  • Home care is one of the most effective forms of health care and typically the customer satisfaction is very high.

Hence we can conclude that home care is an efficient form of health care. The patient and/or his family supply the food and tend to the individual’s other needs. It is less expensive than care offered though other forms including assisted living facilities, skilled nursing homes and hospitals. In general, home care costs only one-tenth as much as hospitalization and only one-fourth as much as nursing home placement to deal with comparable health problems.

Most of the older patients feel that home care extends life. A study by the U.S. General Accounting Office has established that people receiving home care tend to live longer and have a better quality of life. Home care helps not only add years to life, but “life to years.”

It can therefore be deemed true that home care is the preferred form of care, even for individuals who are terminally ill, as many home care agencies and independent care givers provide hospice support and services at patients’ home.
